“Get her a teddy bear,” Virat said munching on the lays. I felt like grabbing that packet of lays from Virat and stuffing his face in it. Maybe that would keep him silent. “Sorry,” he said after seeing the way I was looking at him. “But girls love teddy bears you know.”
“Or you can tell her that you love her?” Sheetal chipped in.
“What!” both me and Virat exclaimed at the same time.
“Come on, could it be anymore special than when the guy she loves finally admits that he loves her too,” she said looking at me trying to plead her case. “I mean you can’t beat a romantic proposal on her birthday itself-can you?”
“I guess you can’t,” I said thoughtfully. “But it’s not going to happen.”
“Knew it,” Virat added still munching on Lays.
“Why not?” Sheetal asked. “How long are you planning to wait?”
“Don’t know,” I replied. “But not now anyways. I can’t and I have told you the reason.”
You know,” Sheetal said. “She’s not going to wait for you forever. One day she will start thinking that maybe you consider her just a good friend and she will then start thinking of moving on.”
“I know,” I said. “And I hope I can tell her before that day comes. But I have to be ready. I have to know that when I tell her about the feelings that I have for her, then there’s no way I can hurt her. I am not sure I am at that stage yet.”
Sheetal didn’t answer back. She just kept looking front as if wondering about something. “Anyways, I still don’t know what I am going to do on Anjali’s birthday,” I said a few moments later.
“Arrange a surprise party for her at the innovation centre on midnight that day,” she said after a while.
“Call all her friends as well.”
“Nah,” I said after thinking about it for a while. “It’s an old trick and everyone seems to do that nowadays. Remember we do this for Virat every year and he actually falls for the ‘there’s a fight at the innovation centre’ call every year.”
Virat looked hurt as we grinned at him. “Besides, I want to make it the most special day of her life. That means something unique. And birthday at the innovation centre isn’t unique by a long shot.”
“Then jump into the girl’s hostel and surprise her. That would be unique,” Sheetal said jokingly
“I am not as dumb as Virat you know,” I said carrying on the joke.
“Yeah,” Sheetal said, “I sometimes wonder how is it that I am dating Virat.”
“No, no,” I said as if I was insisting on a very heavy point. “You two are perfect for each other.”
“How is that?” Sheetal asked me.
“He is dumb, you are smart-you compliment each other. Although he’s a bit girlish, I have to admit, but then you are the dominating one in the relationship so I guess that works out fine,” I said.
“Yeah,” Sheetal said pondering. “I guess someone has to wear the pants in the relationship.”
“Exactly my point,” I replied. “And with Virat being the girl in the relationship, you do just fine as the guy. And that’s why you two are perfect for each other.”
“Yeah,” Sheetal continued, “my girlfriend,” she said looking at Virat, ‘”is a very sweet guy.”
“Oye,” Virat shouted a few moments later. We turned to look at him. “I am still here you know,” he said looking affronted.
I and Sheetal looked at each other and waving our hands at him said, “Oh-whatever.”
“Whatever?” he said angrily, “Fine! You think I am the girl here-well screw you guys,” he said and walked off, his nose flaring.
“See what I mean,” Sheetal said as Virat walked off. “He even throws tantrums like a girl.”
“I can see that,” I said.
“Anyways,” Sheetal said a while later. “You keep thinking about how you are going to make Anjali’s birthday the most special day for her. I have to go make up with my girlfriend.”
“Yeah,” I said winking at her. “Get to her before she starts crying. It’s really horrible once the girl begins to cry.”
“Nah,” Sheetal said as she started leaving the frustu, “I’ll probably kiss her and she’ll be alright. My girlfriend surprisingly shows some boyish traits.”
I laughed as Sheetal started walking off after Virat.
“Tell me if you get some ideas,” she said.
“I will,” I answered back as Sheetal got lost in the distance.
“Or you can tell her that you love her?” Sheetal chipped in.
